RED FLAG WARNING CONTINUES FOR OUR AREA Be Safe -
Brush fires have been breaking out around Rhode Island and Massachusetts in recent days, and with no immediate end to the drought conditions in sight, the risk level remains severe.. With the gusty winds and lack of rain, any fires that start could rapidly spread and become difficult to extinguish.
Because of that, people are urged to be careful when discarding cigarettes and avoid all outdoor burning, which includes the use of fire pits, charcoal grills, and any devices that could emit sparks or flames. In Massachusetts, residents are also asked to conserve water.
RABIES ALERT~
Westport Animal Control has announced that two animals tested positive for rabies.
1 Woodchuck from Main Road and 1 Coyote pup from Old Bedford Road have been confirmed positive for rabies. This brings the total to about 11 this year.
In Massachusetts, rabies is most commonly carried by raccoons, skunks, foxes, and bats. Residents are urged to take the following precautions: As rabies can be fatal if left untreated.
Avoid Contact with Wildlife: Do not approach or handle raccoons or other animals displaying unusual behavior.
Children: Teach children to observe wild animals and unfamiliar pets from a safe distance and avoid approaching them. Remind them to let an adult know if they see an animal acting strangely or behaving unusually. Especially animals not usually out during daylight hours.
Pets: Supervise pets closely when outdoors and ensure they are current on their rabies vaccinations, as this is a critical step in protecting them from this potentially fatal disease.
Secure Food Sources: Keep trash bins tightly sealed and avoid leaving food outside.
Report Sightings: If you see a raccoon or other wildlife behaving erratically please report it to your Police Dept. or Animal Control.
If you see any animals acting ill, please contact Animal Control or Westport Police at 508-636-1122 immediately.
